From Tuesday February 20 to Friday February 23 from Barra do Quarai, Brazilian border to Sao Borja
First step in Brazil
Tuesday February 20, after a visit to the brickworks we leave Shirley and her husband. Today we enter Brazil. We first cross the border of Uruguay before that of Brazil which is located 80 km further in the town of Urugaiana. A beautiful city with entertainment. We visit its city center as well as the cathedral. The first difficulties concern the language in Brazil the population speaks Portuguese. With difficulty we find accommodation, it is a border town and everything is expensive there. We find a nice hotel with a gargantuan lunch.
Brazil as we imagine it
On Wednesday it will take us a lot of time to resolve the administrative problems relating to the telephones. In Brazil, to have a telephone card you must first make a declaration to the police. We leave the city very late. It is very hot and the road is in very poor condition. We will spend a quiet day and we will painfully reach Barragem Sanchuri, 30km further. A fairly typical Brazilian village with dirt roads and barricaded houses. The population seems to live in a situation of poverty, Brazil as we imagine it. We stop there for the night in the only inn in the village. The comfort is very basic but the owners are very welcoming.
There are some really great people
Thursday we leave slowly on the road which will take us to Itaqui. A very ordinary road in the middle of the rice fields and its immense factories with storage silos. Itaqui is an unremarkable town. There we meet Augusto, a wonderful and unusual person. He left his job to quietly help us find accommodation. He then invited us to share a meal. Beautiful evening with Augusto, his wife Rita and a couple of his friends.
Friday we continue our journey quietly to stop at São Borja. A city with lots of entertainment in its streets and Brazilian-style architecture with colorful buildings.

- Shirley and Martin, on the border of Brazil, hosted us.
- Augusto and his wife Rita.
